Metal AM methods have received a tremendous amount of media coverage over the last few years. GE spent more than a billion dollars to acquire two manufacturers of metal AM systems. Desktop Metal has received nearly $300 million in funding not from venture capitalists, but from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Ford, and BMW, potential users of the technology.
It is hard to open any trade journal without seeing articles about new applications of metal AM. Is it becoming a game changer for the North American metal casting industry? A study done over the last year investigates the cost of metal AM compared to metal casting over a wide range of component complexities, sizes and production volumes.
One casting company augments its traditional foundry operations with additive manufacturing. A new sand 3D printing system is expanding operation for the foundry’s customers in such areas as:
Today, AM can simplify the products of complex castings, while simultaneously improving functional performance and reducing part weight.
