2003-4 PROGRAM: Chapter Meetings Schedule

PAST MEETINGS

9/18/03      Human Resources: Behavioral Interviewing

As the economy continues to improve and we consider adding people to our operations, it is more important than ever to make sure we bring in the “right” people, particularly in the current competitive business environment. This is what Jack Matens will stress in his own entertaining and engaging way during his presentation “Behavioral Interviewing” at the AFS Chicago Chapter’s kick-off meeting for the 2003-2004 season.

In his presentation Jack points out that the “Costs associated with recruiting, interviewing and hiring the wrong employee can be staggering.  An effective selection process can increase the odds of choosing the right employee.”  A cornerstone of an effective process is a widely used set of hiring techniques referred to as behavioral interviewing.   Jack’s presentation will outline the following major components of this method, which include:

* Major competencies needed to succeed in a specific position.

            * Specific dimensions or characteristics for that position.

            * Weak and illegal questions versus insightful and legal questions.

            * Analyzing information and deciding on the best candidate.

In addition to being a veteran human resource, training and development professional with more than 10 years of foundry experience, Jack is a highly entertaining and dynamic speaker.

Prior to his college career, Jack invested three years in the U.S. Marine Corps in the military police.  Following this, he received his B.S. in Psychology from Louisiana State University.  This was followed up with a M.A. in Education from Tennessee Tech University, and then another M.A. in Community Counseling from the University of Tennessee.

After several years in education, he joined the Wheland Automotive Division of North American Royalties, as Corporate Director of Training and Development and Human Resources Manager in 1991.  Wheland Foundry, at that time was the largest U.S. independent manufacturer of cast automotive brake components with sales of $400 million and employed 1900 employees.

Jack worked at Wheland until 2001 when he and his partner formed the Roundtable Group – Mediation and Arbitration Services, where he devotes his time today.

10/16/03    Metalcasting’s Role in the War on Terrorism

How the AMC/CMC R&D Programs are benefiting the Metalcasting Industry

During the course of the war on terror, our military have been using many aging weapon systems that still fight effectively in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.  Keeping parts available for these aging systems is one of the objectives of DoD’s metalcasting R&D program.  Castings play an integral role in many hard-to-procure parts for these systems.

The metalcasting industry continues to benefit from the long-standing, mutually beneficial research relationship with the Departments of Defense and Energy.  For a decade in one program and nearly so in the other, AFS and its members have been participating in research that has led to much of the industry’s current technology.  Some of these developments include rapid tooling and lost foam casting of aluminum parts.

And more is on the way.

Mike Gwyn is the Director of the Metals Technology Business Unit for the Advanced Technology Institute.  This organization is responsible for metals technology that manages collaborations for the Defense Logistics Agency, ManTech, U.S. Army and the Department of Energy.  These programs total over $35 million in R&D , technology transfer and application engineering.

Prior to joining ATI, Mike was President and COO of Pelton Casteel, in Milwaukee.  He was also Vice President of Electric Steel Castings in Indianapolis.

Mike has received the Lorenz Gold Medal from the SFSA in 1996 and was presented the Shepherd Award in 1998.  His participation at AFS includes Chairman and Director of the Cast Metals Institute.   He received the CMI Director’s Award as well as the AFS Service Citation.

Mike received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from Indiana University.

11/19/03    Foundries Around the World

By Dean Martin - Hunter Automated Machinery Corp.

As sales manager for Hunter, Dean needs to know what is going on in foundries around the world. Make sure to be at the meeting where he will share his insights.

All of us working in the U.S. foundry industry are well aware that the level of metal casings imported into the U.S. has grown significantly during the last several years. The capabilities of foreign foundries to ship castings into American markets continues to grow for a variety of reasons. What edge do these foundries have that we don’t?

During the last several years Dean Martin has had the opportunity to visit a wide range of castings plants overseas. In his presentation “Foundries Around the World”, Dean provides an in-depth look at the metal casting operations in several countries while exploring many of the foundry practices used abroad. He will also give us a glimpse at the situation “from” China.

Presentation by Stephen V. Heller (VP) of the United States Business and Industry Council (USBIC)

Title:  “The Status and Future Prospects for U.S. Manufacturing”

SUMMARY:  USBIC is a small business organization that focuses on domestic manufacturing and national security policy and their relationship to trade policy.  Unlike groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturers, USBIC represents the small and medium-sized manufacturer.  Steve will analyze how we have gotten to our present situation and the driving forces today, as well as how focusing only on reducing domestic manufacturing costs or Asian currency manipulation is not enough to restore the health of American manufacturing.

"The USBIC Pro-business" agenda: “We seek to expand our domestic economy, with particular emphasis on our manufacturing, processing, and fabricating industries, and through the resulting growth to extend a high standard of living to all Americans.” -  http://www.usbusiness.org

The USBIC was started in 1933 to further the interests of its members. Current membership approximates 800, primarily middle-market American manufacturers.  About half of the organization's resources support a "think tank" about issues impacting US Manufacturing; the other half of its resources lobby members of Congress on these issues on a daily basis.
